"I am very tired," says "Charmed" executive producer Brad
Kern. "I masochistically wrote and directed the season finale. I don't know what
I was thinking. I'm actually in the editing room right now, looking at it. We're
almost there."
The Thursday-night drama about the Halliwell sisters, good witches in San
Francisco, has been in a rebuilding phase all year. Last season's finale set up
the death of eldest sibling Prue, played by Shannen Doherty, who left the show.
To fill the gap, Kern introduced indie-film actress Rose McGowan as Paige, the
long-lost half-sister of surviving witches Piper and Phoebe (Holly Marie Combs,
Alyssa Milano).
Much
of the season focused on the integration of Paige into her new family -- and her
efforts to cope with her newfound magical powers -- along with the romantic and
supernatural complications of Phoebe and her half-demon lover, Cole (McMahon).
At the same time, Piper has been dealing with the travails of married life with
Leo (Brian Krause), the sisters' "Whitelighter," or supernatural guide.
Despite all the ups and downs, Kern promises the family remains intact through
the final episode.
"I think it's safe to say that this season ends on a positive note," he says. "I
think we owe that to the fans. It was pretty dark last year, so all the sisters
survive this year."
Near as Kern can tell, the audience likes the new addition. "The audience seems
to be reacting favorably to Paige. I feel like, with all the darkness we've had
to deal with through the middle and end of this season, with the Cole-Phoebe
saga, Rose's wacky, fun, bright-light personality helps keep the show in balance."
"I've been very happy with her. I think she's integrated very well with Alyssa
and Holly, both on and off the set."
Off-camera, McGowan had to adjust to the demands of series television, including
working more hours per day for more months out of the year. "She was limping and
spewing oil and crawling last November," Kern says. "She and I had a long
conversation when we hired her. I told her it's a marathon, not a sprint, and
that's the biggest difference."
"I was a little concerned about her in November, because she was exhausted,
beat. But she found a way to figure it out. I think one of the reasons why her
performance has improved steadily each and every episode is because of her
pacing herself emotionally and physically."
"She ends the season no more tired or exhausted than the other two girls, so
she's done a miraculous job."
As far as the Cole-Phoebe romance goes, the witch and the demon have faced
almost every kind of natural and supernatural challenge over the course of the
season, including facing down (or giving in to) ultimate evil. "We've honored
the Cole-Phoebe love story," Kern says. "Our mantra is always the same -- no
matter what happens between the two of them or separately, their love shines
through everything. Love, we hope, will conquer all, and that's that we've held
true to."
"I'm a big romantic. The Cole-Phoebe story is one of my favorite parts of the
show. It's a tragic love story, but love stories are. It's sad that he's got
this evil DNA that keeps him from being able to shed it completely to fully
realize and have a normal love life with Phoebe, but that's the tragedy."
"He loves her, and she loves him, and they keep trying to find a way, and they
will keep trying to find a way. They'll just have to be a different way."
Despite the big wedding episode, don't expect happily ever afters. "You can't
stay married to a demon for very long," Kern says. "There will be a parting of
the ways. That doesn't mean that they love each other any less, and that's the
tragedy."
"As we move toward the end of the season, Phoebe will have tried it every way
possible. She will have tried it with him not having [demon] powers, tried it
with him having powers, tried it on the good side, and tried it on the dark
side. There won't be another way to try it. She's going to have to move on with
her life, and that means without Cole."
"Cole's going to have other ideas about that."
As to whether this means supernatural divorce proceedings, Kern says, "Without
giving too much away, Cole won't be coming from that place next year, but that's
where the surprise will be. He will be coming from a different place, a new
place. There's good, there's evil and then there's a third way."
After
last year's cliffhanger finale, Kern decided to call on an old friend for a
little help in getting through this year's closer. As a former supervising
producer on the short-lived FOX cult series "The Adventures of Brisco County
Jr." he turned to that show's star -- also the star of the "Evil Dead" feature
films -- to play an FBI agent in the May 16 episode.
"I called Bruce Campbell up to guest-star in the episode I wrote and directed.
He's great. Bruce rocks. We're going to let him direct an episode next year as
well. Alyssa and he did a movie together several years ago, so they knew each
other. It was just a riot on the set. We all had a lot of fun."
Regarding next year, Kern says, "With Paige having been fully embraced by her
sisters, and with a whole year of being a witch under her belt, and with Cole
and Phoebe's relationship being somewhat resolved, [and now that] Piper and Leo
have something to look forward to, we look at next year as a rebirth."
"Though there are some looming questions and looming evils, I really wanted to
end the season on a positive note. It was time to get back to the light and use
that as a springboard for next year."

Sperando in un finale "stregato"

finale della scorsa stagione ha raccontato la morte della sorella più grande,
Prue, interpretata da Shannen Doherty, che ha lasciato lo show. Per riempire la
mancanza, Kern ha introdotto l’attrice di film indipendenti Rose McGowan nei
panni di Paige, la sorellastra fino ad allora sconosciuta delle due streghe
sopravvissute Piper e Phoebe (Holly Marie Combs & Alyssa Milano).
Gran parte della stagione, ha posto l’accento sull’integrazione di Paige nella
sua nuova famiglia – e i suoi sforzi per adeguarsi ai suoi poteri magici appena
scoperti – insieme alle romantiche e soprannaturali complicazioni del rapporto
tra Phoebe e Cole (Julian McMahon), il suo amato mezzo-demone. Allo stesso
tempo, Piper, ha avuto a che fare con le fatiche della vita da donna sposata,
con Leo (Brian Krause), l’angelo bianco o guida soprannaturale delle sorelle.
Nonostante tutti gli alti e bassi, Kern promette che la
famiglia rimarrà intatta anche dopo l’episodio finale.
“Penso sia più sicuro dire che, questa stagione finirà con una nota positiva”,
dice. “Penso che lo dobbiamo ai fans. E’ stato alquanto triste l’anno scorso,
così, quest’anno, sopravvivranno tutte le sorelle”.
Come racconta lo stesso Kern, il pubblico gradisce il nuovo personaggio. “Il
pubblico sembra reagire favorevolmente a Paige. Mi sento come se, con tutta
l’oscurità con cui abbiamo avuto a che fare circa da metà di questa stagione –
con la saga di Phoebe e Cole- il carattere vulcanico, divertente e la
personalità vivace di Rose, abbiano contribuito a controbilanciare lo show.”
“Sono stato molto contento di lei. Penso che lei si sia integrata molto bene con
Alyssa e Holly, sia sul set che fuori.”
A telecamera spenta, la McGowan si è dovuta adattare alle richieste delle
trasmissioni che prevedono molte puntate, che includono lavorare più ore al
giorno per più mesi all’anno. “Rose aveva delle difficoltà, era stanca,
affaticata (letteralmente sarebbe stato ""vomitava olio" N.d.T) e si trascinava
lentamente, lo scorso novembre” dice Kern. “Rose e io abbiamo fatto una lunga
chiacchierata quando l’abbiamo ingaggiata. Le ho detto che sarebbe stata una
maratona, non uno sprint, e questa è la differenza più grande.”
“Ero un po’ preoccupato per Rose, a novembre, perché era esausta, scoraggiata.
Ma ha trovato un modo per risolvere la situazione. Penso che una delle ragioni
per la quale il suo lavoro di attrice è progredito così vantaggiosamente in ogni
episodio, sia l’equilibrio fisico-psicologico.”
“Ha finito la stagione non essendo più stanca delle altre due ragazze, perciò ha
fatto un lavoro miracoloso.”
Man mano che la storia d’amore tra Phoebe e Cole progredisce, la strega e il
demone affrontano quasi ogni genere di sfida, sia essa reale o soprannaturale,
lungo tutto il corso della stagione, incluso il sopraffare o l’essere soggiogati
dal male estremo. “Abbiamo onorato la storia d’amore tra Phoebe e Cole”, afferma
Kern. “Il nostro principio basilare (mantra) è sempre lo stesso: non importa
cosa accade tra i due, o ai due separatamente, il loro amore riuscirà a brillare
nonostante tutto. L’amore – noi speriamo – conquisterà tutto, ed è a questa
verità che ci siamo attenuti.”
“Sono un gran romantico. La storia di Phoebe e Cole è una delle parti dello show
che preferisco. E’ una storia d’amore tragica, ma le storie d’amore sono così.
E’ triste che lui (Cole) abbia questo DNA diabolico che lo trattiene dall’essere
capace di contrastare il suo lato oscuro completamente per poter costruire e
mantenere una storia d’amore normale con Phoebe, ma la tragedia in fondo è
questo.”
“Lui (Cole N.d.T.) la ama, lei lo ricambia, ed entrambi continuano a cercare un
modo, e continueranno a cercare un modo per stare insieme. Dovrà pur esserci una
strada diversa…”.
Nonostante l’impegnativo episodio delle nozze, non aspettatevi un felice
proseguimento.
“Tu puoi stare sposata con un demone per molto tempo” – dice Kern – “Ci sarà
però un bivio. Ma questo non significa che si ameranno meno, e questa è la parte
più dolorosa.”
“Man mano che ci avvicineremo alla fine della stagione, Phoebe avrà tentato con
lui (Cole N.d.T.) mentre possiede ancora poteri magici demoniaci, avrà tentato
con lui senza poteri, tentato con il suo lato buono e con quello oscuro. Non ci
sarà più un altro modo per provare a stare insieme. Lei (Phoebe N.d.T.) dovrà
andare avanti con la sua vita, e questo significa….senza Cole.”
“Cole avrà però idee diverse a riguardo.”
Riguardo al fatto che questo comporti procedure di divorzio soprannaturali, Kern
dice, “Sebbene non si sia mai allontanato troppo, Cole, non tornerà da lì l'anno
prossimo, ma questo “dove” sarà la sorpresa. Tornerà da un luogo diverso, un
luogo nuovo… C’è il bene, c’è il male, e poi c’è una terza via……….”
Dopo il finale in sospeso dell’anno scorso, Kern ha deciso di chiamare un
vecchio amico che lo aiutasse nell'episodio finale della serie. Come precedente
supervisore alla produzione della serie cult della Fox “Le avventure di
Brisco County Jr”, che ebbe vita breve, lui (Kern N.d.T.) si rivolse alla star
di quello show – che era anche la star di punta del lungometraggio “Evil dead”-
per interpretare l’agente dell’FBI (agente Jackman N.d.T) nell’episodio del 16
maggio (Ep. 4.22 "La fine del Trio?").
“Ho chiamato Bruce Campbell per fare da guest-star (personaggio famoso che si
aggiunge al cast di uno show televisivo per uno, o alcuni episodi; ne è un
esempio Debbi Morgan/La veggente N.d.T) nell’episodio che ho scritto e diretto
(4.22 N.d.T). Lui (Campbell N.d.T.) è un grande! Bruce spacca! (Come diremmo noi
N.d.T). Gli lasceremo sicuramente dirigere un episodio l’anno prossimo. Lui e
Alyssa hanno girato un film insieme alcuni anni fa, perciò si conoscevano già
(Il film a cui si riferisce è "Corsa all’oro" che RaiDue ha trasmesso circa già
un paio di volte). C’è stato solo un gran baccano sul set. Ci siamo tutti
divertiti un sacco.”
Per quello che riguarda l’anno prossimo, dice Kern, “Con Paige che sarà
completamente accettate dalle sue sorelle – e con un intero anno da strega alle
spalle – con il rapporto tra Phoebe e Cole che sarà in qualche modo risolto, e
ora che Piper e Leo hanno qualcosa per il quale valga la pena do guardare
avanti, noi (lo staff di produzione N.d.T) guardiamo al prossimo anno come ad
una rinascita. Sebbene ci fossero alcune domande e creature demoniache che si
profilavano all’orizzonte, volevo veramente finire la stagione con una nota
positiva. Era tempo di tornare alla luce ( agli eventi positivi) e usarla come
trampolino per il prossimo anno.”

· In America, ma penso un po’ ovunque nei paesi anglosassoni, la parola
SEASON e la parola YEAR, sono usate con lo stesso significato, ovvero al durata
di un’intera serie di “Charmed (Streghe)”;
· Nel gergo televisivo americano, uno SHOW, è inteso come una qualsiasi forma di
intrattenimento, come film, telefilm e anche programmi televisivi come gli
stessi TALK-SHOW;
· Quando il produttore esecutivo di “Charmed”, Brad Kern, parla di "nota
positiva" alla fine della quarta serie, si riferisce all'annuncio della
gravidanza di Piper.
Scusate per tutti i “N.d.T” che ho “seminato”
nell’articolo, ma mi sembravano necessari. Nella versione originale, non fanno
altro che dire “lui” e “lei”, ma non specificano di chi stanno parlando.
