"In our fifth season, we definitely know how to do what we do," says Combs. "We're
comfortable but at the same time want new ideas, so we value it, when directors
suggest ways we can do things differently."
Combs attributes the show's success to a constant influx of new imput and ideas.
"It's really easy to become complacent and let your character become you, when
it comes to 15-hour work days, I'm acting like Piper more often then myself.
This season however we will endow Piper with certain physical trait that will
make it easy to distinguish Piper from myself," says Combs. "For most of the
year I'm going to be pregnant, which is a new experience for me, It's something
I have never done before, I'll have a prosthetic belly. It's weighted so I'll
walk funny, with a little waddle. We've got the best prosthetic guy around
making the belly, the guy did Jennifer Aniston's, so I'm in good company".
With her character going though such a big life change, Combs is sure she'll
have plenty of material to keep her performance vibrant.
"The pregnancy gives me something new to act out. It will be exploration. This
is real-life stuff that I think makes this show so endearing, people can't
relate to fighting demons, but they can relate to either having or being parents."
Charmed might be a show that centers around the use of magic, but Combs insists
that the fantastical elements are only a vehicle used to transmit serious drama.
The pregnancy, for example will be as real as possible, says Combs.
"Being a woman's show, we absolutely have to do it that way, so I want to be
cranky and have swollen ankles and all kinds of stuff, like in real life."
Of course, a pregnancy in the family isn't the only thing that viewers will have
to look forward to.
"We're going down the road with Piper and Leo's marital problems," confides
Combs, "We have to do the marriage counseling thing, because there are many
unheard of sources of comedy in that."
Combs has only seen a few of the scripts for the new season, but she's already
pleased with the direction of the show.
"In the fifth year of the show, we're just flying by the seat of our pants, we've
got no plans, so we're just going to do what feels right for stories, the
network has given us a little freedom, and we're going to use it".
Apart from new storyline additions, Charmed will also be starting in a new time
slot.
"Now that we're going to be on Sundays, which is a hell of a lot less
competitive," she says, "that I don't think anyone's expecting a lot out of
us-and that's a good thing. It gives us room to be what we want to be, not what
anyone else expects us to be."
Combs is convinced that, especially thanks to the creator's newly increased
creative freedom, Charmed could continue for years to come.
"We could keep doing this for a long time, because the show is all about
family," says Combs, "that's why the dynamics keep changing, we're happy with
our little family. I know we'd like to keep making Charmed as long as people
keep watching it."

La Combs attribuisce il successo dello show al continuo flusso di idee e
impulsi.
“E’ veramente facile essere soddisfatti e lasciare che il tuo personaggio
diventi te stesso, quando si arriva a lavorare 15 ore al giorno, mi comporto
come Piper più spesso di quanto non sia me stessa. In questa stagione comunque,
faremo assumere a Piper qualche tratto fisico che renderà facile distinguere
Piper da me”, dice la Combs. “Per la maggior parte dell’anno sarò incinta, che è
un’esperienza nuova per me, una cosa che non ho mai fatto prima, avrò una
protesi per la pancia. E’ pesante, perciò camminerò in modo buffo, con un
leggero dondolio. Abbiamo il miglior costruttore di protesi –
cinematografiche, N.d.T. - che sia in circolazione, lo stesso ragazzo che ha
fatto quella per Jennifer Aniston (si riferisce alla protesi usata dalla
Aniston per l'8^ stagione di Friends N.d.T.), perciò sono in buona
compagnia”.
Con il suo personaggio che attraversa un così grande cambiamento nella sua vita,
la Combs è sicura che avrà una tale abbondanza di materiale da rendere la sua
interpretazione più vibrante.
”La gravidanza mi darà qualcosa di nuovo sul quale lavorare. Sarà
un’esplorazione. Questa è una cosa della vita reale, che io ritengo faccia
diventare lo show accattivante, la gente non ha a che fare con il distruggere
demoni, ma può avere voce in capitolo sull’avere o essere genitori”.
Charmed sembra essere uno show che si concentra intorno all’uso della magia, ma
la Combs sostiene che gli elementi fantastici sono solo un mezzo per trasmettere
emozioni concrete.
“La gravidanza, ad esempio, sarà il più reale possibile”, dice la Combs.
“Essendo uno show interpretato da donne, dobbiamo assolutamente farlo in quel
modo, quindi voglio essere capricciosa, e avere le caviglie gonfie e tutto quel
genere di cose, come nella vita reale”.
Di sicuro, una gravidanza nella famiglia, non è l’unica cosa che gli spettatori
dovranno aspettarsi con l’andare del tempo.
“Seguiremo gli sviluppi dei problemi coniugali tra Piper e Leo”, confida la
Combs, “dobbiamo riunirci e consultarci per la questione del matrimonio, perché
ci sono tante incredibili sorgenti di commedia in tutto ciò”.
La Combs, ha visto solo una piccola parte dei copioni della prossima stagione,
ma è compiaciuta per come viene diretto lo show.
“Per il quinto anno dello show, ci stiamo comportando come se non avessimo la
cintura dei pantaloni (lo so che non ha molto senso in italiano, ma penso
voglia dire che se la stanno prendendo con calma, senza fretta N.d.T.) non
abbiamo piani, così faremo solo quello che sembrerà giusto per le storie, il
network ci ha dato una certa libertà, e la useremo”
Messe da parte le nuove aggiunte alle storie, Charmed comincerà anche in un
nuovo orario.
“Ora che andremo in onda di domenica, che è un inferno con un sacco di serie
molto meno competitive”, dice, “non penso che la gente si aspetti tantissime
novità, e questa è una buona cosa. Ci permette di avere uno spazio in cui
possiamo essere ciò che vogliamo essere, e non quello che qualcun altro si
aspetta che saremo”.
La Combs è convinta che, specialmente grazie all’accresciuta nuova libertà dei
creatori, Charmed potrebbe continuare negli anni.
“Noi continueremo a farlo per molto tempo, perché lo show è tutto basato sulla
famiglia”, dice la Combs, “ecco perché la dinamica continua a cambiare, noi
siamo felici con la nostra piccola famiglia. So che ci piacerebbe continuare a
fare Charmed fino a che la gente continuerà a vederlo”.
